Ballistas were used in Roman times and taken up in the Medieval period. A wooden model, fun to build and educational.

The mechanism is like a giant Cross Bow, but the tension is produced by twisted ropes.

The draws tring is pulled back by the windlass until it engages on the latch and with the bolt loaded the trigger is primed to fire.
