Buddha Head on Wooden Plinth

Due to the crowns and the ornate jewelry of this type of Buddha head, certain designs can be traced to images in the Buddhist temple in Phimai that was built in the late 11th and early 12th centuries in Northeastern Thailand.

The crown, no doubt, was a sign, as in India, of the attainment of complete Buddha hood according to Vajrayana belief. Also, the crown may represent a Thai legend, according to which, as the finale of the duel of magical appearances, the Buddha assumed the attire of royalty in order to covert a heretic king.

Buddha is made from resin with the base made from a wooden block finished in a teak varnish. The head is finished in soft earthy mottled light browns and greys.
